The papier mache beads were actually made of a lightweight foam-like substance, then painted with numerous coats of enamel to give them a hard, shiny shell.
The process did not lend itself to the making of small items; indeed, the peach-coloured beads are an inch in diameter!
About 19" long, the summer necklace is almost weightless despite its bulk.
